Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced a 33 percent seats for women in the next Lok Sabha polls. This is the first time for women’s empowerment. He made this announcement at a rally in central Delhi on Sunday. Seven women will be eligible for Odisha in 21 Lok Sabha seats. Presently, three women from Odisha are representing the Lok Sabha. There are 12 women in the assembly with 147 assembly seats. However, the Congress and the BJP dismissed Patnaik’s announcement that the women’s votes were abolished. A senior Congress leader said the BJP was not the objective of allocation of 33 percent seats for women and criticized BJD for using it as a last resort in the face of losing credibility.
From April 7 to May 9, 2014, the general elections were held in nine phases and this was restricted to seven stages. In the last election, all 8,251 candidates (at least 15 in each constituency) compete in 543 constituencies, while 7,000 lost their deposits. 9.27 lakh polling stations were formed in the election. Only 55 crores (66.3 percent) used their vote. 60 lakh votes were cast to the note. Of the 8,251 women contesting, only 668 (8 percent) were women. 62 of them won. If women are too small to compete, ten percent of them have not won. The BJP-led NDA alliance won 336 seats in this election and was a huge success. The BJP has won 282 seats on its own and has achieved the first time in its ability to form the government alone. The Opposition Congress failed to win the 2014 election and failed to win 10 percent of the seats. It is the second largest party in the Lok Sabha despite winning just 44 seats.
